Resumen
El Gobernador Bories fue el primer buque-factoría que procesó ballenas bajo bandera chilena en aguas de la Antártica. Construido en Inglaterra en 1882, fue convertido en buque-factoría en Noruega en 1906 para la Sociedad Ballenera de Magallanes. Realizó, entre 1906 y 1914, ocho expediciones a las Shetlands del Sur, operando durante la temporada de verano principalmente en bahía Balleneros, isla Decepción. Otra de sus funciones era el transporte del aceite producido por la compañía a Europa, que se realizaba durante el invierno de cada año. En 1914 fue hundido por la Royal Navy en Scapa Flow para usarlo como buque de bloqueo en la Primera Guerra Mundial. En este artículo, considerando la naturaleza fragmentaria y dispersa de la información disponible en periódicos de Reino Unido, Países Bajos, Alemania, Noruega y Chile, reconstruimos la biografía del buque-factoría, sobre todo los servicios prestados a la Sociedad Ballenera de Magallanes.
